Our History

Gafat Endowment is a sustainable charity organization and has got its name from a special place called Gafat, where the Sebastopol Cannon was built, which was the beginning of a new technology in Ethiopia and reflects the vision of Emperor Tewodros. The Endowment is established on January 31, 2008 and operating under Proclamation No. 194/2004 of the Amhara National Regional Government for the Registration and Management of Charitable Organizations and Associations.

ORDA Ethiopia played the main and the leading role in the process of establishing Gafat Endowment. When ORDA Ethiopia attempts to establish Gafat Endowment based on international experiences, the main starting point was to contribute in the process of freeing the people of the Amhara region from poverty and backwardness. Since its establishment, it has been endeavoring to contribute several economic and social benefits to the people of the region.

The Endowment has the mission of helping to improve the living standards of the people of the region by expanding investment and in development sectors where the government has given attention and where there is a market gap, it is creating competitive and profitable companies, collecting resources from donors, reinvesting in the strategic sectors and creating job opportunities, bringing knowledge and technology transfer, and participating in charity activities.

The endowment has a guiding strategic plan and has accomplished the first five-year strategic plan (2016-2020) which is prepared with a balanced score card (BSC) planning system and has achieved many results. In order to strengthen the achieved results, after evaluating the challenges faced during the implementation of the first strategic plan period and taking into account specific deficiencies, the second five-year strategic plan (year 2021-2025) has been prepared and is being implemented.

This five-year strategic plan has been cascaded and is being implemented by all its income generating companies. In order to achieve its mission, the Endowment has framed three strategic themes derived from the five year strategic plan which are institutional excellence, expanding investment and charity activities and is working diligently to achieve these strategic themes.

Strategic themes of the Endowment

The key objective of the Endowment’s strategic themes are to provide a clear, high-level framework for strategic planning, decision-making, and resource allocation, ensuring that all efforts are aligned with the Endowment’s long-term vision and mission.

Strategic themes

  1. Institutional excellence

The endowment has a guiding strategic plan in which institutional excellence is one of the fundamental emphases. As mentioned earlier, among the strategic themes that the Endowment implementing is institutional excellence which is mainly concerned with empowering employees to be their perceptions and skills aligned with business development and leadership to enable the companies competitive and profitable in a sustainable manner. These strategic themes of institutional excellence activities are being implemented by all companies. To mention some of theme carried out are:

  • Empowering the staff
  • Preparing and implementing efficient and effective operational systems
  • Adopting ERP (enterprise resource planning) technology
  • Service delivery and customer management
  • Implementing change tools like, kaizen & BSC
  • Creating business view and sense of ownership
  • Implementing experiences relevant to the mission of the Endowment

These institutional excellence activities enable companies to do business responsibly, to fight fraud, to increase productivity, to adopt cost-saving strategies and to turn companies fully into profit.

  1. Expanding investment

This is the second strategic theme which is concerned with expanding the existing and creating new investments. As mentioned earlier, Gafat Endowment is achieving its mission by engaging in investment fields that the government has focused on and the private sector has not dreamed of enough. In this regard, the leading role and results achieved in promoting the development of flower and fruit farming to the region and encouraging other investors to come and invest in the region is admirable.

It has also given an emphasis to engage in a new investment mainly in the agro-processing sector. In this regard, what the endowment working comprehensively is to realize the establishment of starch processing factory which can produce starch and related products using corn as a raw material.  Therefore it is endeavoring to make noticeable the process of setting up this factory by considering the regional importance it gives in service and job creation and it calls on all concerned stakeholders to play their part in making this a reality.

  1. Charity activity (social development)

One of the core missions of the Endowment is to support the development of the region by taking part in charity activities. From this point of view, in order to implement charity activity a guideline has been prepared and approved by the Endowment’s board member to be implemented according to the projects that ORDA- Ethiopia has studied and presented.    To mention some of charity activities are:

  • providing start-up capital for youth to engage in beekeeping & animal husbandry
  • Offer financial support for business skills training to youth
  • Support the community who are living around Tana flora farm to be beneficiary of water and electric city
  • Building social development institutions

Despite the fact that in the past years, the charity activities executed are not as we necessitated, but it can be considered as appreciable start and it will be implemented in a more wide-ranging manner in the future.
